whatsapp alternative

Postby singing_fish » Fri Feb 21, 2014 10:44 am

Hi,
since Facebook bought whatsapp I don't like to use it anymore.
I know it's totally fantastic to autopost "I am on a walk", "the sun is shining", "Now I went to the toilet" and other important things but not for me :|
Is there anybody out there using a similar app for iOS and Android?

greetings,
rené

The app I keep reading about in the Dutch newspapers is "Telegram", but I have no experience with it myself. I still use carrier pigeons to tell my friends I went to the toilet.

Is there anyone that has a great recipe for carrier pigeons? I'm off to buy one of those things Bacardi_bat has!

Thank you! Those carrier pigeons make a mess and this looks like something that doesn't shit every where, whenever it feels the need :) .

On a more serious note: there's this famous American economist called Milton Friedman who popularized the phrase "There's no such thing as a free lunch". I don't agree with his take on economics (he was a libertarian with a religious belief against government intervention) but I read that quote long time ago and it struck me as a true thing. You should be cautious when someone offers you something for free.

I don't have a smart phone or a tablet and if I ever decide to get one, it'll probably be one that runs on Linux with apps that are open source. I don't have a Facebook account, no Twitter account and no Linkedin account either. I simply have a deep mistrust of things that are free and not open. I'm not paranoid or anything like that and I don't think the NSA is after me, but please ask yourself how these companies and their services make money while being "free" to use. They finance themselves and earn money for their investors by selling data you give to them by using their services and you have hardly any control or even an idea of what they collect and what they're using it for.
