spambot countermeasures

Postby singing_fish » Mon Jan 20, 2014 7:06 pm

Hi all,
due to annoying spambot registration in this forum we activated "admin account activation".
At the old forum we never had problems with that
That's the price for going phpbb mainstream

cheers,
rené

That was no bots I guess  xD
I'll ask Björn if we have any backup of the old forums.
For nostalgic and achievement reasons ;)

The change to Catchpa had some effect, but it didn't totally stop the spammers, I still get a couple of activation requests per day. I'm thinking about going back to a question but a bit different this time. We used a question on the ((bh)) forums to stop the spammers and it worked really well. We had a clan roster in the "general discussion section" and we asked people to fill in the name of the 3rd member in the roster or something like that when they registered. That was a big hurdle for some, but most people managed to figure it out on their own and like I said, we had no spam at all.

I made the change, the question is now about a word in the server rules which means people will have to look them up and read them. Which is a good thing anyways! If my mailbox gets spammed by activion mails again, I'm gonna change it back to Catchpa again.

Meh, 3 spammers in a couple of hours time after the change. What kind of bs is this? Are these really bots or are these human beings who get to spent 1 minute to register and post for a truly pitiful amount of money?

The question I asked is what the first word in the second rule of the server rules is (spawnkilling is the answer btw.) You actually have to find the post that states those rules and you have to look for it, since it's not on the front page or anything like that. We don't even have a front page.

Lol, I just received 3 messages of newly registered accounts while typing this.

???

I changed the settings to a 3D catchpa since we still get these spam bot registrations :( .

Found a post about countering spammers on the main phpBB forums, seems the catchpa thingies have been broken long time ago. Went back to Q&A and added a required field to the user registration form that needs to be changed manually for the registration to succeed. I hope normal humans can still get passed this...

No activation requests in the past 12 hours which is a positive thing. Can someone please register a new account and tell us what you think about the things you have to do to register? You can use the same email address, no need to use another one.

I mean it's nice if it stops the spam but if normal people can't get passed it, it's useless.
